What are Postal Categories?
Postal Categories are based on Mail Piece Sizes! Below are the specifications for each type of postal category.
Postcard:
Must be between 3.5” – 4.5” tall and 5” – 6” wide
Must use 8pt – 14pt stock or equivalent
Flat (ex. a 9” x 12” envelope)
Must be between 6.125” – 12” on it shorter side and 11.5” – 15” on its longer side
Must be .25” - .75” thick
Letter: (ex. a #10 envelope)
Must be between 3.5” – 6.125” tall and 5” – 11.5” wide
Can be inserted into an envelope, or a tabbed self-mailer
Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM)
Best postal rates for mass mailings
Must be between 10.5” – 15” on its long side
What are the Postage Rates?
As of Jan 21st 2020, the following postage rates for standard letter size mail pieces are as follows:
Full Rate First Class Postage
This is the regular rate for postage that everyone pays
No minimum piece count required
Stamp - $0.55 per unit
Meter Strip - $0.50 per unit
Presorted First Class Mail
This is the bulk mail rate for postage often used to mail bills, handwritten notices, checks, etc. and is is more expensive than marketing mail and not-profit rates but receives forwarding and return service at no additional charge.
USPS requires a minimum of 500 pieces to be mailed at one time
Rate as low as $0.383 per unit
Marketing or Presorted Standard Postage
Less expensive than First Class or Presorted First Class rates, this postage rate is usually used for marketing and direct mail advertising purposes.
USPS requires a minimum of 200 pieces to be mailed at one time
Rates between $0.165 - $0.291 per unit
Nonprofit Postage
As a great way for nonprofit organizations to send out mail at an affordable price, the US Postal Service has created unique postage rates to help charitable organizations. Nonprofit mail, is treated like marketing mail, but at lower prices.
USPS requires a minimum of 200 pieces to be mailed at one time
Rates between $0.086 - $0.173 per unit
